–to on is said in many ways (i.e. according as category), but primary being is ‘what it is’, which means substance (1028a13-15).

Being as substance (e.g. ‘is Socrates’, ‘is human being’) is primary being. On the contrary, other categories (‘is pale’, ‘is tall’) are secondary beings, which are said with reference to substantial being. This situation is analogised with the case of ‘healthy (hygieinon)’ (1003a34ff). That is, predication ‘healthy’ is applied to not only person but also food (e.g. vegetable), complexion, urine, etc. But they have difference with respect to way of application. For application to person is as holder of health, to vegetable as cause of it, and to complexity or urine as mark of it. So, predication ‘healthy’ is said primarily about person as holder of health, on the contrary other predications is predicable only through referring to health which person holds. If we think the case of ‘be’ analogically with that of healthy, we can understand two points;(i)Substance is primary being.
